Here the Rhine flows south to north and the Moselle joins it, flowing from the southwest, from France. The confluence is known as the Deutsches Eck (German Corner).

Numerous castles are found along this narrow gorge. At each, ground and river traffic would have to pay a toll.

Legend has it that a nymph called Lorelei would sing to lure boatmen to crash on rocks in the river. But she fell in love with one of the boatmen and jumped to her death after he perished.
